Rest In Peace Joan…

Rest In Peace Joan…

September 4th, 2014

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother.

Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated.

My mother’s greatest joy in life was to make people laugh. Although that is difficult to do right now, I know her final wish would be that we return to laughing soon.

  1. Elizabeth says:

Rest in peace – you were a beloved entertainer!

    • Linda Groff says:

Wow! What a wonderful world she lived! I will miss her; her voice, her lack of reverence…just talking the way ‘it is’. I have been ‘with her’ for over 25 years, and admire her truth, her nerve, and her being. If there is something beyond ‘this’I wish her the truth of her being, the angels looking after her, and the peace that comes from ‘knowing’. She mattered…a lot.

      • Phyllis says:

I have watched her for years and have enjoyed her, than melissa joined her mom and made life so much brighter. Your mom created such a beautiful child whom has also gave the world laughter. As I have over the years watch the life that the both have had together, the ups and downs you both have such a great and loving bond. The world has had to suffer a great loss but Melissa you and your son has had more loss by loosing your mom and grandma. Joan will be watching over you both and when you least expect it she will be by your side and I am sure she will pull one of the best practical jokes on the both of you than ever before. BELIEVE! She is by your side and she is now your Angel watching over you..

    • Marisel Ruth Estevez says:

Melissa, I’ve been a fan of your mother’s since the early 1980’s. I learned to appreciate comedy through her, and was so smitten by her smart wit and humor, that I read her book, Enter Talking. I learned all the serious things about her life there, and just Loved her All the more. Sincere condolences to you, Cooper, family, friends and loved ones. Joan connected every soul that ever laughed with her, and somehow it feels, like we’re one big family. We’ll miss her dearly. Love you Melissa, MRE

    • Tina says:

Melissa and Cooper I am so sorry for your loss. May your mother and grandmother rest in peace.
I will truly miss her on QVC and Fashion Police.
I still laugh at the scene on your show with Cooper on the climbing wall saying “come on grandma” and Joan tells the worker “push the toosh, push the toosh.

    • Stacie says:

On June 8th, 1933 the angels in heaven shed tears of sadness as the spirit of Joan descended to earth and gained a body, for the angels knew how much they would miss her, she was a special spirit. On that same day, Meyer and Beatrice Molinsky shed tears of joy as Joan entered this world as their daughter. This special spirit roamed this world for 81 years touching the lives of many. On September 4th, 2014, the angels once again shed tears but this time it was tears of joy along with the Molinsky’s tears of joy for the return of the special spirit on September 4, 2014, those left behind mourn but know one day you shall meet again!

  22. Dear Melissa, I’d like to share with you a small memory I have of your mother. When I was young I loved to watch her on TV variety shows. She was fun and made me laugh. However, at least twice that I remember as she talked with audience members spontaneously she met a couple who were engaged. She asked what was stopping them from getting married and they said that they were trying to save the money for a wedding. Both times she humorously chastised them for letting that stand in their way and she told them that she would pay for the wedding herself. As a young teen that really impressed me. It was so obvious that she loved being married, and also that she loved you. That is what I will remember most about your mother that she deeply loved her family, and that she was generous to others. I hope that you find many hours of peace and a life of happiness. Love, Andrea

Melissa ~ my heart is breaking for you and Cooper. I have heard your mom speak on severl occasions about her fears of growing old and ill, especially should she ever get alzheimer’s, and how she never wanted to live if she couldn’t be healthy. Your mother has been an inspiration to me and her humor has carried me through some tough times. I always admired her honesty and the way she broke the glass ceiling for female comedians, yet she always remained respectful and classy. She is so proud of you and the mother you are to Cooper (you are an amazing mom). The two of you were truly the loves of her life. Though I don’t know your mother personally, I gleaned from the reality show, her act and even on Fashion Police the love she had for her family was always so apparent. May God bless you and hold you up in your darkest hour. Remember too Melissa, you will always be your mothers’ daughter.

  127. Judy Zik says:

So sorry for your loss. I lost my Mom 3 months ago. It is just horrible. You can’t prepare for it or manage it any more than you can prepare for getting hit by a bus or seeing Betty White naked. All kinds of idiots are going to ask you how you are. You don’t have to answer them. Even at my Moms funeral I ran into that. I wanted to say my two parents are in Jars upfront. Why don’t you go ask them.

My Mom and I were huge fans of your Mother. She was like a knife that cut through the bullshit of celebrity. She was also such an inspiring survivor. After all the knocks she took in life she never kept going and kept reinventing herself. This world is a much quieter place today without her voice. Now everytime something in the world happens we will all be wondering just what zinger she would have made out of it.

I hope it brings some solace knowing she was so loved and that so many people are sending you their thoughts and prayers.

  151. Gayle Gerard says:

Your mother was a force of nature. I grew up watching comedians and emulated them even as a small child. I can do your mother’s early routines by heart. “Chase me. Chase me…Chase you tomorrow? Yeh, chase me tomorrow.” I think about the “collie-huahua” and the method by which she clamed to dust her floor (put the baby in a romper and throw a cookie across the room). She was original, crazy, smart and incredibly quickwitted. I lost an idol. You’ve lost a mother. I can’t imagine how you feel, but I offer my deepest condolences. To your son and to you, PEACE, Melissa.

  152. Paula says:

I am so so sorry for your loss. . .sending strength and peace to you and your family. Your mom will forever be with you. . .

  153. Tory says:

Dear Melissa, My deepest condolences on your loss. The news today is something I have feared and prayed I wouldn’t hear, over the last week.
Your Mom is someone I have been watching for as long as I can remember TV memories. And she always talked so much about you – it was obvious how much she loved and adored you. She will not be forgotten and I, amongst so many, will miss watching her every Friday evening with Fashion Police – a hilarious staple!
What an icon, what an outrageously fearless, intelligent and funny, funny lady. She has left an indelible mark on the entertainment world, and there will never, ever be another Joan Rivers.
You are in my thoughts and prayers at such a difficult time. I wish you a healed heart.

For a while your mom was saying “Willie Nelson’s so dirty the wears a Roach Motel around his neck and an Odor Eater for a headband!”; when Willie’s daughter wrote her and voiced an objection to it, your mom stopped using that line. Your mom had something many comedians these days do not…a heart.

  158. Exodus Zusag says:

    Dear Melissa,

I have always looked at your relationship with your mother and saw a mirror image of my relationship with my mother.
In 2009 my mother was taken from us unexpectedly from a brain anuryism. The days that follow her death were for me unimaginable.
5 years later my heart still aches for her presence. I tell you this only because I know that only those who have been through the loss of a mother can truly understand what it feels like.
You are not alone and no…this is not the end of your life. This is the beginning of a “New Melissa”. You will understand more as time goes on.
Your mom will always be by your side as I have experienced in my situation. Every now and then she will show you signs that she has only left you here on earth but not in spirit.
You will always be her daughter and she will always be your mother.
May God bless you and your family during the heart breaking time.

Prayers and strength are headed in your direction.

Melissa. I am so sad to hear of your Mother’s passing. Joan Rivers was one of a kind. God clearly broke the mold. The relationship the two of you shared (Mother/Daughter) is one that many envied. Thank you for being a wonderful daughter to a wonderful mother.

PS I will never ever forget Wife Swap when Bristol Palin painted her nails! It was a moment that really shows what a loving and kind woman Joan Rivers was.

  171. Marina Berry says:

    To Melissa and Cooper,

Our family is so very, very sorry for the loss of your mother and grandmother. Through all the sadness that you are experiencing, the one thing which I can see: For fifty years, Joan Rivers gave me, my family, and people the world over moments of laughter throughout their lives; hence, diminishing any pain, even for just a moment, that they might be experiencing in their lives. How rich is that?!!!

  172. Kristen says:

I am so sorry that your Mom didn’t make it. I went to a lecture series in Portland years ago and she was the guest speaker. She was so incredible to listen to…people like her just had an aura that was something that others just don’t. I went to the “meet and greet” after and was able to talk to her briefly. She told me she really liked my boots and thought it was great that a tall woman like myself was confident enough to wear high heals. She made me feel good and that was my lasting impression of her. Just a tiny, nice, hilarious, one of a kind lady. My Mom also passed away this year and I’m the same age as you Melissa…it’s really a difficult thing but it’s an odd manageable hurt. I don’t know you but I really do wish you the best. We are all part of a club now that has a really horrible initiation.

  173. Ava Atzram says:

Sincere condolences to you and your family upon the loss of your dear mother. She was an icon and inspiration to all, providing balance in a difficult world. She will be deeply missed by us all. May she rest in peace.

  178. Christopher Freeman says:

I am so sorry for the loss of your dear, wonderful mother. I have been a fan since I was in college in the early ’80’s and she was hosting the tonight show. I enjoyed her standup, her guest appearances on all shows, as well as her books, movies, and reality shows. Of course, the red-carpet and E! was wonderful. I admire and respect her work ethic, her energy, her attention to detail to make her products and brand so fantastic. I admire the way she carried herself and she always looked beautiful. I also greatly respect how obvious it was that you and Cooper were more important to her than anything else. From August 1 to Aug 27 my mother was in ICU and in an induced coma for six of those days. My mother has survived, and we are grateful. When I heard the news of your mother, I could not stop thinking and praying for you all. As a gay man, I will miss your mother and always be grateful for her intelligence and humor regarding our lives. And most important she made the world laugh.

  179. Abby Shwide says:

    Melissa and Cooper:

I just want to send my condolences to the both of you. I’m so sorry for the loss of your mother. I loved her caustic humor, altruism, generosity and acceptance of humanity. I also loved that she said what was on her mind–no holds barred. She could be so mean and insulting, but it was just comedy. Shame on people that have bad-mouthed her. RIP Joan. You will be missed.

  180. Alana says:

Hi Melissa very sorry abut Joan she was an amazing woman!! It’s early I know… but I think Joan would have wanted Fashion Police to live on, such a good show and good way to remember what she was all about. I cannot see anyone else on the show other than you. You would do great… know that!! So glad to have had his many years of entertainment from Hollywood’s finest. RIP Joan and thank you (laughing is SO important in life) ♡

  181. Mary Kate McTeigue says:

    Dear Melissa,

My whole large extended Irish Catholic family is from Larchmont, New York. My family was very matriarchal – from Grandmothers, Great Aunts, Aunts and cousins. They were strong, smart woman. The way they talked about your mother I swear, I thought we were related. I thought she was another great aunt or something – that I just hadn’t met yet. They would talk about what she said on the Johnny Carson Show the night before – if she had talked about Larchmont or not and her latest joke. The joke would be repeated for the next few days until it started all over again. She was smart and funny and fit into our family of woman like a favorite Aunt.

I had the privilege of seeing your Mom perform at the Mahaiwe Theater in Great Barrington, Ma about a year of so ago. A powerhouse. An inspiration.

    Sorry for you family’s loss,

    Mary Kate McTeigue

I want to send you my condolences! I also lost my mother the same way, and know the pain you are feeling. I am truly sorry you had to begin a journey you could never have imagined without your mother. I also never imagined being in that place without my best friend (my mother). I literally shut down for months until I slowly began to breathe again, and learn to live a life without my best friend. I think sometimes we see mothers and daughters on TV and think we know them, but in reality my friend only you will hold the intimacy you and your mother shared! Never let it go, gradually face the new life you live, and take plenty of time to say your goodbye. I also never was able to say goodbye to my mother, she died as your mother, just know in life sometimes it is what it is, and we can’t change that, but that bond went with your mother, and will be eternal… I will keep you in my prayers for healing. BTW, I grew up watching your mother( I am the same age as you), and admired her courage to stand up in the midst of a male dominated industry; that courage was very inspiring to all women! You should be very proud. I’ve never commented on any site before (don’t even know if this is your site), but I hope you receive this.

  186. Connie Averett says:

Be strong Melissa and know you have many friends, known and unknown, who support and care for you. As a nurse, I hope you fight for the cause that any procedure, at any age, performed under anesthesia, should be performed in a hospital setting with full resources to handle all emergencies. With the advent of changes in healthcare, I fear we are going to have more incidences like this happen to innocent people.

  187. Jim Duff says:

I feel like I’ve lost my mom all over again. What a wonderful funny lady. Just saw her recently in Vegas and her energy and humor were outrageous!! We miss you and love you!!

  188. George Dennett says:

Mere words cannot express my deepest sympathy for your loss. For GOD sake she was your mother, friend, mentor and advisor… and much more. Try to remember that you will heal and get through this pain and depression. You are so much like your mom. . .that is why she planned every minute for you. So I ask you Ms. Rivers -as a huge (not in size) fan of yours and your dearly departed mother, Joan – to take the reins and do your mother proud with more productions and laughter…. You will have your own legacy and we all ask you to remind us of her every chance you get…. I miss Joan Already.

  189. Neha Sehgal says:

Very sorry to hear this. May her soul rest in peace and may god give you all the strength to cope with this difficult time.

  190. Bonnie Nawrocki says:

Honey, few people have that mother-daughter relationship. I can’t imagine your feeling of loss. But in time you will just cherish the gift of that relationship with your mother. She gave me so many belly laughs! Will keep you in my prayers for some peace. She would want you to be happy again.

  191. Kathy Lingo says:

    Dear Melissa,

Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your mother. She was a true comic genius and entertained the world for many years. You were her best friend and confidant and your relationship with your mom reminded me of my relationship with my mother. Although we were not famous I know what losing a Mom feels like. My mother died 5 years ago and a piece of my heart has been missing ever since. I feel for you Melissa…take a deep breath and just remember all of the good times you had with your Mom…she loved you more than anything in this world!

  192. Leslie says:

Joan Rivers’ passing leaves a hole in the world that will never be filled. I am so sad.

  195. Bonny Goldstein says:

Joan will always be a part of our hearts and though we share the sadness with everyone who knew and loved you over the years that spark of humor and many kindnesses is such a wonderful and lasting legacy to leave behind. Thank you, funny lady, for all the many, many wonderful laughs and smiles over the years. God be with you and your family.

  202. Maria Ann says:

She sleeps with the angels. No matter how dark life could look…Joan was always able to bring the laughter. Melissa and Cooper…know she was loved and irreplaceable.

  203. Gail Kenwright says:

I can’t believe Joan has gone, what a funny woman & outrageous character. The world’s a poorer place for her loss. Melissa, & Cooper, must be absolutely devastated.

  204. Sandy Brunelli-Kornkven says:

Dear Melissa: I remember watching your mother on Johnny Carson when I was a teenager and wishing Carson took off more often so I could watch your mum host the show. Though I was not a huge QVC fan, whenever I would get notifications your mother would appear, I would record and watch those shows. Loved your E shows on the red carpet with your mum. Thrilled when she appeared on episodes of Nip/Tuck and when Fashion Police and your reality series arrived I was in heaven. The mother and daughter relationship and love you shared for each other was so beautiful. What a tremendous mind!!! What an amazing wit!! What an amazing woman!! Have and always will look up to her and remember her with a smile and a laugh. She lifted me up on many a day when no one else could. May her memories and very full life bring you and your son and family comfort. RIP Joan. We have lost an incredible woman, but the other side has inherited one hell of a soul!!!!

Your mom was a special person!

  211. Roberta Lopis says:

Melissa and Cooper: Thank you for sharing your precious Mom and Grandma with her fans all these years. I can only imagine it can be tough with no privacy. Although in allowing me into your life on “Joan and Melissa” we were able to see a true family constantly evolving. In spite of your Mom’s zealous zest for life and a laugh….she had a heart of gold. We could all see the depth of her love for both of you in the things she said and did. Those things will live in your mind and heart forever where no one person can take from you. I have watched your Mom for nearly 60 years and have a high regard and the utmost respect for her. Your professionalism, strength and honor were noticed by millions during this trying time. Your Mom would be proud beyond words. I will pray for you and your family often. I wish the best for you and Cooper. As you already know, only time will heal your loss year by year, but your memories and love are infinite for each other. I am now your fan.

  212. Ryan Field says:

There are no words other than I’m sorry. My mother had the same endoscopic procedure at Sloan Kettering in July and had a heart attack during it. Thankfully, the heart attack happened at Sloan and they saved her. But in my mother’s case the cancer is not curable. It bought us time. It’s not easy any way you look at it. Wishing you and your family strength and peace.

  213. Susan says:

We will so miss you Joan- you made us laugh and gasp thru the years. Truly will miss. Hang in their Melissa!

  214. Lori says:

I saw the footage of your and your son at your mothers services and I could not help but cry when I saw how attentive your son is to you. I pray that you and Cooper continue to heal and know that your mother has touched so many people in so many different ways and she will not be forgotten!

  215. maria says:

Dear Melissa- You and Cooper are in my prayers and this weekend at Mass (I am a Roman Catholic) I offered my communion for your mom. I like millions loved her. I know dear what you are going through. I have a one and only- a daughter. She, like you and your mom are very ,very close and six years ago, I had the horrible decision to take my mom off life support- she was a vibrant 80 year old who suddenly had a massive stroke. I will keep you and Cooper in my prayers- hang in because in time it will get better.

  218. As a young woman, I have lost both my parents (at 22 and 27). I’m going to be 33 soon and I am just really feeling for you during this challenging time. I have been navigating this world without parents and in doing so, write on my blog Losing Your Parents ( about my own life experiences so that others who have also lost parents may try on some of the tools and resources that I have tried on myself. Although you don’t know me, I’m sending you a giant hug. Love and Light, Lisa A. Snyder

  219. Linda M says:

Such a difficult time for you and Cooper. It’s impossible to process that such a force of nature left us within a snap of the fingers. She is missed so much. Melissa you will get through this and give yourself time to grieve. There is a process and it’s important that you acknowledge the steps and let them happen naturally. Re-evaluate the professionals you have around you (lawyers, cpa’s, bankers, etc.) and follow your gut as to who to keep and who to thank and say goodbye to. You’re a good girl, you’re a good Mom, you’re intelligent, smart and there is a big life ahead of you. Joan will continue to guide you if you listen closely.

    Melissa and Cooper,

I am truly sorry for your loss. I always looked forward to watching your mom on what ever show she was on but, I really enjoyed her on fashion police. She made me laugh and always made me look at any difficult time I was facing with laughter. I will truly miss her. I really enjoyed seeing the two of you together sharing the love you had for one another was so obvious. Hold on to all those memories because that will make her passing easier to cope with. Joan left you here on earth but, she will continue to look over you and your son Cooper. I know that you two were her shinning stars. When you look up to the heavens know that she is smiling down at you with all the love a mother carries for not only her child but her grandchildren too. Rest in peace Joan, you will forever be missed!!

  227. Michele de Liniere says:

    Dear Melissa and Cooper,

I know it must be strange hearing for all these people you have never met, but all of us feel like we know your family. During this difficult time, I pray you have true friends and the support system you need to help you both spiritually, emotionally, and financially (that people do not try to take advantage of you).

I had the opportunity to see your Mom do a show in Atlanta when Louie Anderson was her opening act. He was just starting out. She was fantastic. So funny and so pretty. I never understood why she would cut herself down re: her looks. She was beautiful.

My thoughts and prayers are with you both.

    Dr. Michele de Liniere

  228. Alison says:

May God give you and Cooper comfort as only He can. There is truly nothing like the love of a wonderful mother. The mother/daughter relationship is so precious and I pray you will find peace in the days ahead. It is so clear how much your mother loved you from the various television shows you did together. She would want you to be happy and to live your life with laughter.

  229. Randall in Houston says:

Dear Melissa and Cooper, you are surrounded by millions of people around the world who wish nothing but the best for both of you. Your Mother was an Icon before she even knew it. Within the LGBT community she was seen as a fierce protector and defender of our feelings and rights, she never wavered. She was beautiful inside and out, talented in everything she touched and never seemed to take herself too seriously. She will be missed around the world. May you find comfort in laughing and crying. Melissa your Son is so well mannered and he is going to be a “looker”. Your Mom raised you to be independent and follow your own path. You came out a lady! Not many of them in Hollywood. Take care of yourself and of Cooper. Please remember your Mom will never be forgotten nor taken for granted. She was truly a force of nature and a “piece of work”! Xoxoxo

  230. Amie says:

A Poem for MELISSA RIVERS (& COOPER) with Love:

Mommy’s “not” gone! She did “not” leave!
Mommy’s still here with you & me!
Mommy is the bright “STAR” up in the Sky,
Mommy is the “RAIN-DROP” that Angels Cry!
Mommy is the “SUNSET”, painted pink, purple and blue,
Mommy is the “SHADOW” in every HUE!
Mommy is the “WIND” blowing through your Hair,
Mommy is the “FLOWER’ blooming & fragrancing the Air!
Mommy is the “OCEAN WATER” that Glissen’s in the Sun…
like little diamonds dancing till day is done!
Mommy is the “BIRD & the BUTTERFLY” too,
Mommy is the “STARDUST”, sprinkling down on YOU!
Mommy is the “RAINBOW” streaking across the Sky..
and the Glimmer of “SUNSHINE” that squints your eye!
Mommy was the (Best) MOTHER..& GRANDMOTHER…& FRIEND,
The “LOVE” you have for her will “NEVER END”!
So, MELISSA… Close your eyes & you will see,
That MOMMY’s memory will always be,
“FOREVER & EVER” in your HEARTS & MINDS,
MOMMY will be with you “ALWAYS”… till the END of TIME!

(*With Love & greatest heart-felt Sadness & Sympathy for you & son, Cooper

I still think of her everyday. I am happy you were able to have her in your life for so long and that she looked like she enjoyed life to the fullest. Take care of yourself and know she is always with you and watching over you and your son. All the best, from Fans in Toronto, Canada.

  247. Kathleen says:

I just read your book a few weeks ago about how to be Red Carpet Ready for any occasion. It’s core was not about Fashion but having lovely manners and class and love for others. It was excellent. Hold your head high, your Mother would be so proud. I will miss her greatly.

  248. Randee Farquhar says:

I am so sorry about the loss of your wonderful mother. She was one of a kind!! I too had to make the decision to take my mother off of life support — so I know what a miserable and heartbreaking decision that was for you. I know the feeling of emptiness you have. My son was 11 when my mother passed and he did not cry – he kept it all inside and instead he turned to drugs not too long after her death – PLEASE PLEASE make sure that Cooper cries his eyes out, screams and yells if he needs to – so hopefully he will not turn to self-medication to ease the pain. Of course, I blame myself….but I know that I could not control that anymore than I could keep my mother alive… still haunts me after 9 years. I will keep you both in my prayers and hope you laugh again soon.

  249. Debra Marshall says:

Please accept sincere sympathies. Your mother’s humor got me through some very tough times. I thought she was the best host of the Tonight Show and eagerly awaited Johnny going on vacation so I could watch her. Take only the good thoughts with you during your time of mourning.

Melissa, My thoughts and Prayers are with your entire family! Your Mom will be missed by All!

  259. I’m so sorry that you and your son, and all of her fans, lost dear Joan too soon. She was wrong when she said “no one will say ‘so young’–I’ll say it! When you have a full wonderful life of your own creation and friends, a great daughter and grandson, pups that you love. When you look fab, are productive, and having a ball…you’re so young.

I just found her nearly hour long conversation with a psychologist. So fascinating and brave.

You gave her the send away of her dreams. I do not think she was right that there is no hereafter…there is!! I am sure of it.

  260. Belle Copeland Marsh-Hansen says:

I have watched this wonderful woman my entire life, she never failed to make me laugh or to feel empathy for her trials and tribulations!! I will miss her fabulous wit so very much!! Thank God she has records of her work, I would so welcome a compilation of her humor, thus we could all continue to laugh…and I will always hear, within my head, her unique delivery of that humor that made her such a unique comedienne!! 280. Omaira Lozano says:

Dear Melissa We are writing from Venezuela to express our condolences for the loss of your mother, our admired Joan. We keep you and Cooper in our hearts.

  281. I know what it’s like to lose a mother, so I understand what you are going through. I’ve written a little something about how I met your mother in San Diego doing standup. She was destined to become a star. Not only is she friendly to the public, her routine was unlike any other. I’ve watched her through the years. What you had to do took great courage. Hearing is the last part to go as a person is passing, so I’m hoping you told her how much you loved her, even though she couldn’t respond, she could hear you. I think about you and Cooper every day and ask God to help you through this. Losing a mother is the worst thing that will ever happen to you.

  282. Melissa and Cooper – Joan’s spirit is surrounding you every minute. Talk to her and you will feel closer to her. The sadness never goes away, you just learn to tolerate it and move on, as difficult as that is.

  283. August from Argentina says:

I loved you Joan! I’ll miss you and your sense of humor! I never lost an episode of fashion police and I discovered your life when I started whatching the show. You were such an icon and a great character. Can’t believe you’re gone, it’s very sad. Rest in peace! My regasds to your family form Argentina.

  284. Sole says:

    Dear Melissa,
Everyone at our house is so completely saddened be the loss of you beautiful mom and our favorite comedian Joan Rivers. She had a very singular way about her where she could be outrageously funny and immensely caring at the same time. God bless her always. She will forever be missed. Take care.

  285. Melissa,

I still can’t believe Joan is gone. While I will miss her jokes, and that raspy voice, I can’t help but take comfort in knowing that she didn’t suffer through an illness. I’m sending you and Cooper my deepest sympathies during this time. I know you’re making Joan proud. You’ll be together again, and until that day comes, she’s making Heaven laugh.

    Missing her always,

  297. Chris Jervey says:

    Dear Melissa,

Sending you love and support during this difficult time. Joan was an amazing woman, and was truly a one of a kind lady. She has brought so much laughter and happiness into my life, and into so many people’s lives. She had such an amazing purpose on this earth, and I love that she was so busy and lively up until the end. Stay strong during this time.

  298. Carrie says:

I too am a Joan ranger. I am going thru some sad times right now and guess what? I am currently listening to your moms audio cd of I hate everyone. I am driving with tears rolling down my face it is so hysterical. I have not laughed like this in years. And I love when she refers to u too. She will forever making me and others happy and laugh- unlike any other. I love her.

  299. Wade says:

Melissa, I feel as if I know you and your darling son Cooper. Please keep your chin up, although that is difficult right now. I am SO sorry for your loss, a loss that is being felt all over the world, especially in the gay community. We loved your mother, and we love you. What was available online for viewing regarding the services, they were fantastic! You and your son are amazing, never forget that. In loving memory…..Joan Rivers. Please take good care of yourself during this very difficult time. Your mother wouldn’t want you to “let yourself go.” I have personally felt a huge sense of loss for some reason, perhaps because I watch every show you all produce. She may not have known me personally, but through media, I knew her. I miss her terribly already, and I was sick to hear of the news. You and Cooper will be all right. Hang in there, Melissa! We love you!

    Warm Regards,
    W.T. Lee

  300. Rachel Taylor says:

I just want you to know that I truly adored you’re mother’s unbridled sense of humor! I love how she always said exactly what she thought (and probably what most people thought)! So funny and quite brilliant! My sister worked for CBS news for 25 years and said she was known for being extremely kind and generous. I know you are devastated right now, but this lowly house wife, from Connecticut, with three kids wanted you to know that I think she was fantatsic! And, I hope that at my memorial service, people say that same things about me that they did about your mom. That I was kind, smart, funny, generous and loving. What a gift she was to you and your family, but also to millions, whom she made laugh, regularly! I will miss her! I will keep your beautiful son and you in my prayers. Peace and love.

  301. Karyn Womack says:

I am so sorry for your loss Melissa. It’s crazy that I never met her but I am so sad. My mother died just over a year ago at age 67 from lung cancer which was supposed to so so small she wouldn’t even need chemo. It was not to be. She was the oldest of six and my Friday nights for the past year have been going to my grandmother’s house (who is a vibrant 88 years young) with my family and then coming home to watch Fashion Police. I love the show for so many reasons. I have learned a lot about Fashion but I really loved the way your mother treated all the guests. She was so kind and generous and genuinely interested. It was a great contrast to the sting of her jokes which were always funny and the reaction from Kelly, George & Giuliana was gold. I watched some of the coverage from Fashion week and I all I could think of was the jokes that will never be. It is a tremendous loss to all of us. I have been watching her since Carson. Praying for you and Cooper. I have a daughter who was 14 when my mom died and they were very close as well. Death is a powerful equalizer and puts all the important things into perspective. You have all the money in the world and I have spent far too much time obsessing about money and yet none of that matters when you lose your Mom at any age. All we can do is take comfort in the life she lived and all she gave to this world. Thank you for letting me share this.

  302. Barbara says:

Sincerest sympathy to you on the passing of your mom. I am thankful to your mom for giving me so many laughs over all these years because that is one of the greatest gifts one person can give another. I loved watching her no matter what the forum. She was so quick and so smart and so damn funny!!! I will miss her. I am praying for you and your son at this very difficult time.

  303. Jeff Lambert says:

In memory of your wonderful Mom and her support of two important causes, Israel and Guide Dogs, my wife Ellen and I are making a donation to the israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind in Beit Oved, Israel.
We would like to send you and Cooper a Certificate acknowledging our donation in your Mom’s memory. If you would send us an address to where it can be sent that would be wonderful. Be strong, Melissa. Best, Jeff and Ellen Lambert, email

  304. Michele LaRosa says:

I am still watching your mom’s standup monologues. They are helping me through a tough time. She is irreplaceable

  305. Gabriella Taylor says:

Melissa, the light of your mother’s eyes, our hearts and prayers are with you. Joan, thank you for a lifetime of laughter, ♥ We love you, dear Joan Rivers. Rest in peace. ♥

  306. Kevin Andersen says:

Joan made me feel important. She taught me to fight for what I believe in. I am thankful for her treating Gay men with respect. I’m sad I will never know her but happy to be accepted by her.

  307. TL Taylor says:

I am so sorry for your loss. I just loved watching “Joan & Melissa,” such a nice show about your family. Your Mom was so proud of you and Cooper, and she loved you very much. I have certainly laughed a lot over the past few days just watching clips from celebrity wife swap (Bristol P’s spoiled kid, yikes), Joan GPS, on the couch with Kato (did we ever find out what he’s up to?!) and your Mom’s trip to Montana to “roast Smurfs.” Ms. Rivers will truly be missed, and thank you for sharing her with the rest of us. She made me smile.

  308. DeVonna says:

I wanted to say how deeply saddened I was at the news of the passing of Joan Rivers. The world has lost a beautifully funny woman. But I think her willingness to call it like it is, no apologies, is what the world will miss most. She was a shining example of how to boldly live life true to yourself. – with love and great admiration

  309. Debbie says:

Melissa – as a faithful fan of your reality show with your mom, I feel as though I came to understand your relationship. In truth I was not a fan during the Celebrity Apprentice season, but both of you converted me as your mother daughter dynamics unfolded over several seasons. I cannot remember a time I have been so profoundly moved by someone I have never met. As I recently re-watched the episode of Joan smoking pot with Lynn I couldn’t help giggle at her fearlessness juxtaposed with your paternal instincts. Sending you love and light

  310. Peggy Jensen says:

Melissa, I am 57 years old and want you to know that in all those years of living, your mother was one of my very favorite entertainers. Can we talk, it’s just… those phrases just made me laugh. When she told jokes about your Dad, we felt as if we actually knew him. I haven’t been this upset since John Lennon was assasinated, so know that your mother made so many people so happy for so many years.

  311. Janis Harris says:

I would like to send you my sincere condolences for the sudden loss of your Mother. I too have lost a parent as my father died in 2011 after 2 days illness he was 85 years old. She was such a star and she will be missed by many people around the world. I live in England and have thoroughly enjoyed watching both of you on my television. Thinking of you and Cooper at such a sad time. Lots of Love Janis Harris xxx

  312. Peter Kay says:

Melissa, When I think of this tragedy…and it is one…I am sad for you and Cooper. What a tremendous woman your Mom was…she has left you with a legacy that is powerful and sweet. Please, accept my condolences and may your Mom rest in peace.

  313. Maire says:

Mel i was looking a place to leave you this message your mom means the funny in this world what a career but we know that she was more than that. She’s still working wherever she is, is doing what she knows best that’s my felling she’s was like the song you know she work hard for the money, but she work for a place n’ she won that place, one day i’ll gonna make it to L.A and gonna pay my respetcs maybe in ten years when cooper becomes the pride of joy and your family, when the time proves that you mom was irreplaceable. A Big Warm Hug from Latinoamerica.

  314. Lisa says:

I am 56 years old and I have never written a fan letter or tried to contact a celebrity but I felt compelled to offer you and your son my heartfelt condolences on the passing of your dear mother. I really never knew a life without Joan Rivers and her hilariousness. I have watched and listened to her most of my life and even from childhood, her humor delighted me! I truly felt such a great loss on her passing, but also a great wonder about what a remarkable life she lived, having given so much laughter and happiness to others. What a great gift! How blessed I was, as we all were, to have enjoyed her in our lifetime.

  315. Ryan Field says:

    So sorry for your loss.

  316. Janis Harness says:

Melissa-I have no words to help you, only empathy. We have similar circumstances; I am an only child, very close to my parents, my two daughters idolized their grandparents,I had to make the most difficult decision to this point I have ever made: DNR or stop all extraordinary care. Every time I looked at the DNR bracelet on my dad’s wrist it made me sick but to keep my father “alive” was too much. Just like your mother, full of life, giving to the world, making us laugh, shake our heads in shame for laughing at the truth, your mother’s truth, there was no other answer, but the pain getting there was a back and forth struggle until you look into their eyes and you know the person who you loved so much is gone, the soul is gone, the body is still present. On a personal note, I provide anesthesia everyday, do EGD’s, vocal cord biopsy, tonsils, sinus surgery, in other words ENT and GI but not together. In my opinion it is the best case scenario to have anesthesia present for all sedation cases, an actual board certified nurse anesthetist or anesthesiologist .i believe you must keep pushing forward in your pursuit of the truth that took your mother away, too early. Do not give in or up, know that new regulations can be enforced to protect the next mom, daughter, child, father, sister, or brother. I obviously do not know all the details but I certainly know the right outcomes on a daily basis. I am so sorry, truly I am.

  317. Ana Segura says:

    Dear Melissa:

I want you to know that your mom was one of my favorite people to watch and I cried when I found out about her passing. I’ve been watching her most of my life and I will never forget her. I still cannot believe that she is gone. I saw her here in Albuquerque about a year and a half ago and she was out of this world funny. I hope you can help prevent another person from going throught the pain that you and your son are going through with this horrible tragedy. We just weren’t ready to see our mom go yet. God bless you and your son! Your mom is with us and would want us to continue to remember her and don’t worry I will …… Ana

  318. Sandy Brunelli-Kornkven says:

Dear Melissa and Cooper – Please accept my condolences on behalf of the loss of your incredible mother,Joan. I grew up watching Joan on The Tonight Show as a teenager and was in awe of her quick wit and cutting edge humor. I have followed her career over the years, bought her books, DVDs, jewelry, and even when I had no money to spare I would still watch her on QVC because I just enjoyed her energy soo very much. Her interviews on the red carpet were legendary. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed Fashion Police and eagerly awaited every episode just waiting to hear what Joan had to say. Loved her candid interviews on The Howard Stern Show as well. Much love and prayers for peace at this difficult time. The relationship you had with your mother will never be broken. She will always be with you and Cooper as you are both a part of her. Sending love and healing energy at this most difficult time!!! My heart breaks with you. xxoo Sandy

  319. Lisa says:

Melissa–My heart breaks for you and your son. The only thing we have in common is that my mother was also born in 1933. I watched you on line as you have just lived through my biggest fear in life and you did it with such grace. I am not going to tell you how wonderful your mother was because you already know that. I only wish the very best for you and your son. I hope you remember on your darkest days to put one foot in front of the other and
as Anna Nalick sings “just Breath” Sometimes that’s all we can do. I will pray for you always from one daughter to another. Just Breath. Lisa

  320. Joanne says:

It’s been awhile, I loved your Mother so much as she was one of the few people
who could really make me laugh. I have had some rough moments in my life, as many of us do…your Mother’s humor was a blessing. I loved watching, and could relate so much to your interactions with her..precious moments are caught in humor..the underlying love shines through. God be with you and Cooper and many blessings for your future. This too shall pass as they say, but with special folks like you, it may take a little more time…thanks …. you were there for me so many times…both of you. R.I.P Joan

  321. Jeff Barnett says:

Melissa, I know you probably don’t read these, but I would like to offer my deepest condolences to You & Cooper & family on your loss. I never thought in a million years, that I would be watching a show called Fashion Police, because I don’t really know anything about it, but I have gotten addicted to it, I watched it because of your mother’s humor. The world has a great friend, & comic, she will live forever in our hearts & minds. Thanks so much for the tribute last night. I was moved by it & thanks for deciding to carry on with the show, I think it’s the right thing to do & your mother would want it that way. RIP Joan Rivers!

  322. Vivian says:

    Dearest Melissa
I am truly sorry for your loss. During your time of grief, I too lost a loved one and I know that my heart although broken by the sudden passing as your moms will one day mend, I pray for God comfort to guide your family through this.

  323. Lili says:

Condolences to you, Melissa, on the loss of your mother. I have fond memories of watching Joan on QVC. I loved how she would dance at the end of her shows. It was so endearing. She will be missed. She left a lesson behind for all of us to persevere no matter what. The one and only, hardworking, funny, glamorous, kind, intelligent, Joan Rivers. RIP

  324. Nicol Richardson says:

Melissa I can’t say I know exactly how you feel but my heart feels for you. My mom passed away in July of this year & it’s one the hardest things I’ve ever had endure. I wish I could give you a big hug & cry with you then reminisce. Instead I send you an air hug everyday & pray for your healing of loss at your pace. No matter how old we as children get we don’t mentally or emotionally see our patent(s) gone. Take your time grieve as you need & from what I was told it gets better day after day & don’t hold back your treats. You are a strong woman from a strong woman & my prayers are with you. I see you as my sister in my head & you already know your mom, she will be missed by all but mainly by you. Copper is your strength & YOU are his. Much love to you & your family & air hugs!

  325. Yurika Dollar says:

I’m so sorry for your lost. I know the feeling that I lost my dad 27yrs. ago. I know you were close to your mother. I was my daddy’s girl. Aren’t you going to sue the hospital? Otherwise, you mother would be here now. We miss your mother. Take care.

  326. Pamela Doyle says:

Last Halloween on Fashion Police you Mom was so funny. I will never forget her. I’m sure that heaven is a happy place with her warm presence. Love you!

  327. elaine says:

Joan Rivers was one of my favorite comedians. Every time I heard her say: “Can we talk?” I just knew she would say something we had been thinking about but never said out loud. She was wonderful. She always looked great and right on target with her comments. Fashion reviews won’t be the same without her wit and style. My deepest condolences to Melissa. May each day that follows be easier than the day before to get through and laughter returns once again into your life.
