This Mom And Daughter Share More Than Blood
Mothers and daughters have a very special bond and that doesn’t change just because you’re a celebrity. Take Joan and Melissa Rivers: Those girls have plenty to bond over.
Sure, they have the occasional tiff on television and off, but that doesn’t mean that Joan and Melissa Rivers don’t love each other fiercely or have plenty in common. As a matter of fact, they may have more in common than you think!
They share a last name (but it’s not Rivers)
Melissa took on the last name Rivers in 1990, but that’s not her real last name… and it’s not Joan’s, either. Joan Rivers was born Joan Alexandra Molinsky and her married name when Melissa was born was Rosenberg. To the best of our knowledge, Melissa and Joan are now both actually Rosenbergs. The “Rivers” comes from Joan’s agent, Tony Rivers, who suggested she change her name early in her career.
They’re both thriving single ladies
Joan was first married in 1955, but the marriage was later annulled. A decade later, Joan met Edgar Rosenberg and the two were married until Edgar committed suicide in 1987, when Melissa was still in college. Melissa, on the other hand, has suffered through two nasty public break-ups, one with her husband of five years (with whom she had a child) and another with the man she dated for four years.
Mr. Rosenberg remains special to them both
While Joan admitted to having a couple affairs while married to Edgar Rosenberg, they both seemed to remain fiercely loyal to Melissa’s father. Not only has Joan stated that she’ll probably never marry again, but Melissa named her little boy after her father. How sweet!
They’re college educated
Just because they make a living dissing other girls’ and guys’ fashion choices doesn’t mean they aren’t two very smart cookies. Joan went to college and earned degrees in English and Anthropology. Melissa graduated with a degree in History. So, not only are they smart, but they both went on to work way outside their degrees.
They’re not just fashion experts
Joan and Melissa both started out in television, but not by talking about fashion. Joan acted on Broadway and has appeared on many televisions shows and movies, including The Lucy Show, Loose Women and Spaceballs: The TV show. Meanwhile, Melissa (who also contributes to SheKnows from time to time) started out on MTV as an emcee and later went on to appear on shows like 90210, Silk Stalkings and The L Word.
Joan and Melissa support multiple charities
They might be rollin’ in dough, but both women spread the love. Mama Joan supports multiple charities including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the Elton John AIDS Foundation. She also chose the charity God’s Love We Deliver when competing on (and winning) Celebrity Apprentice. Meanwhile, while starring on various celebrity competition shows, Melissa has raised money for Alzheimer’s research, Guide Dogs for the Blind and PETA. Just like her mother, it looks like Melissa has a pretty big heart for the suffering and less fortunate.
They’ve braved the knife
Both ladies admit to having plastic surgery. While Joan once told Anderson Cooper she’d been in for touch-ups more than 700 times, Melissa hasn’t gone to quite that extreme. She’s had a breast augmentation, some nose work and a little Botox. Nothing too drastic! They’re both just making sure they stay looking fresh. It appears to work, too: How old do you think Joan looks? We promise it’s not as old as she is.
